Want to write ficton articles?

Want to write ficton articles?

This lead sounds like a great fit for a number of our PNN ladies who are fabulous fiction writers:

Is this a cattle call? Yes, it is. Don't let that scare you away from attempting to secure a position on our writing staff. We are a small company that specializes in re-writes, editing, polishing, and fiction compilations. We are in need of two (2) temp staff writers for our creative fiction department. It is impossible to outline our ideal applicant, because in the end we are looking for a voice that matches our needs, and the best way to hear that voice is to have interested parties submit writing examples.

So if you are interested, this is what we need to gauge your fit with us.

Write a fiction scene with the following information:

POV is a female, middle aged, successful business woman in the NYC area that is a witch to work with. She has plans today, but she is going to be interrupted with some bad news. No first person narrative.

That is it. You decide the rest. There are no requirements or limits on word count or genre. It must be original work, by you. Please include contact information at the beginning of the scene. Remember, this is not to be published, this is a job interview. You retain all copyright. Please place work in body of email, we are not going to be opening strange attachments from people we have yet to meet.

Email: gigs-vudbt-1386783852@craigslist.org

Subject line: Small media company needs creative fiction writers.

Website for freelancers

Website for freelancers

I've been receiving a daily email from this site for several months and have found a few leads. Many of the gigs listed come from Craigslist, however. Use caution because scammers love to post on Craigslist. Also, if you haven't already, you might consider an additional email account specifically for inquiring about gigs which could be scams. This way scammers cannot clog your regular email with spam.

Happy writing!

Big Day

Big Day

Today my honking huge new PC system arrives, and I'll be officially "moved" into my new office. This also means I'll be able to bring you more of the images you love. My faithful laptop has served me well, but in recent weeks he has begun to lolly gag because I have over loaded him - making it very difficult for me to quickly move files. I'll be glad to take a load off his shoulders (C drive), though I shouldn't have dropped the stuff there in the first place. (My laptop has remote access, which takes longer for me to drop files in the external hard drives.) Anyway, I look forward to posting some new images from weeks ago and getting back on track.

Great Website

Posted on: 09/17/09

Great Website

If you write for a living, then you understand the importance of researching for markets and helpful information. Writing gigs just don't fall into our laps.

I know. We all lament that editors aren't pounding at our doors, calling or emailing us with requests, right? Sad reality is that finding a market for our manuscripts and articles is harder than writing them. Wouldn't we all hire a secretary to research the markets and find perfect matches for our work and then query and submit for us, too? Ahh, the dream life. Back to reality. Finding a market for mss is a lot harder in today's economy. I read a discouraging article on the Writer's Market this morning reporting that "Macmillan Children's Books is dropping from 245 titles in 2009 to 155 titles in 2010". Sigh. And this is just one of many other markets making simiar cuts.

So should we all stop writing and look for other part-time or full-time jobs? Maybe. Or maybe we could change the way we think and write. I once believed I couldn't be successful until one of my books published. I even felt intimidated about calling myself a writer because none of my books had been picked up (yet). Then I realized how silly I had been to gauge my success on criteria that couldn't accurately measure my value as a writer. I changed my attitude about my work and broadened the scope of my "job".

I stay busy working on various writing projects to generate income while I continue to query and submit my book manuscripts. I also continue learning, attend conferences and participate in writing forums. Which brings me to the main purpose for this post. Being a successful writer involves staying abreast on what's happening in the market, what's new, who's new, who's looking for/accepting unagented submissions, which is a monumental task! But, it's critical to locate some sites and join forums to feed me the information I need. Today, I'm suggesting an informative website, Absolute Write, which offers articles, tips, classes and a forum. Take a look-see and if it works for you, great. If not, I'm certain eventually I'll post a site you'll find helpful!

Happy writing!
