The MakeOver

The MakeOver

I've been waiting for 2 years to get rid of that awful cantaloupe color in the "dining room". This weekend the movers came and hauled away the dining room furniture and now I am free to paint up that room and convert it to a study/reading room. I really wanted to call it a library, but I'm pretty sure guests would consider the room a bit over-stated with only one bookshelf.

So the plan is to paint the top half Ponytail. I was a little disappointed when the Paintmixer man at Lowe's informed us that Ponytail is his BEST selling color. What? Last year when we started the remodel on our house, it took me weeks, months to select that color. I know Lowes wanted to hide all their color swatches from me whenever they saw me coming through the door. I carted them home by the bagfuls, testing them in every kind of light: tungsten, fluorescent, natural. I looked at them inside the house then out on the stoop -  in the shade, in full sun. It was insane. When I discovered that Ponytail, I knew it was THE one, and I hated that name.  Who would name a paint color "horse's butt"? Someone gets paid to give paint a name? I want that job!

When it was time to unveil our months of hard labor to all our friends and family, I was reluctant to tell anyone the paint color. I knew no one was going to like a paint color that reminded them of a horse's butt. But, I was wrong. They all loved it. They ran and told their friends who told their friends. But, I'm pretty okay with it. When we visit, everyone's house just looks a little more like home.

So we're at it again spreading Ponytail all over the walls. But first, we have to sand up the chairrail, crown molding and trim so they can be primed and and then painted. Then we have to prime the cantaloupe walls. But,when everyone asks me the name of the chocolate-colored "wainscot" I'm going to tell them it's cow pie. I can't imagine anyone painting their house with that. ;)

Okay - here we are a week later. I have completed most of the work with help from hubby. Mother-in-law is coming for a visit and she will be staying in the room. I have a bookshelf to add on one corner and a few other touches like lighting etc. I'll be posintg the total cost of the job and tell you where we purchased everything. You might be surprised.

For a reminder, we went from the cantaloupe walls above to the new look.
